Program Description
The Undergraduates Clinical Experience Program (UCEP) is designed to expose Stony Brook undergraduates to a clinical setting, to give them experience with patients from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, and to educate them on fundamental clinical skills.

Students will attend 5 clinic sessions. They will be responsible for their own transportation to the clinic.

Students will:

  • learn about a clinical condition through a 30 min to 1 hour comprehensive lecture prior to each clinic session
  • shadow medical students and attending physicians as they examine and diagnose patients from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds
  • provide translation services to patients, if the student is bilingual in Spanish and English
  • assist with data entry tasks
  • learn how to take vital signs and the principles of a basic physical exam and differential diagnosis
  • be given mock medical school interviews at the end of the program

Students will be required to:

  • attend at least one community health education event of their choosing
  • write a double-spaced 1-page reflection of their experience after each clinic session
  • give a 10 minute Powerpoint presentation on a condition of their choosing at the end of the program
  • fill out a feedback form at the end of the program

Upon satisfactory completion of the program, the SB HOME Steering Committee and/or faculty advisor would be happy to write a letter of recommendation.
